Pets that are bored, nervous, or are depressed may develop a persistent paw-licking habit. Because it stays moist, fungal infections are possible, as are lick granulomas - ulcerated sores caused by constant irritation.
Here are a few suggestions to lick a licking problem:
- Spray Grannicks Bitter Apple or Chew Stop on it's paws. These bad tasting repellents are often all you'll need to break the habit.
- Provide new toys. The best toys to keep bored pets occupied are ones with a hole in the center (like a Kong toy) That allows you to put a treat, cheese, or peanut butter inside. Pets will work for hours trying to get to the tasty tidbit.
- Keep a radio or TV on when you are gone.
- Exercise your pet before you leave
- Provide a playmate. Another pet in the house often relieves boredom and anxiety.
- If these tactics don't work, you may need an Elizabethan Collar that slips over your pets head and prevents it from licking.
- In the meantime, keep your pet's paws dry and treat sores with an antibiotic ointment. Cover it lightly with gauze and put a sock over it to keepit in place. If the problem persists, you may have to see your veterinarian.
